Devices Worn on Military Ribbons - The following are devices that are worn on either the ribbon bar or suspension ribbon of Military Decorations. A maximum of FOUR devices may be worn on any single ribbon.

The Bronze Oakleaf Cluster is worn for the 2nd and subsequent awards of the same medal (usually Army, Air Force, and Defense) to a maximum of four. The Silver Oakleaf Cluster is worn in lieu of 5 Bronze Oakleaf Clusters.

The Gold Star (5/16") is worn for the 2nd and subsequent awards of the same medal (usually Navy, USMC, and Coast Guard) to a maximum of four. The Silver Star (5/16") is worn in lieu of 5 Gold Stars.

The Bronze Service Star (3/16") is worn to indicate participation in campaigns or operations, or for an additional award of the same medal or ribbon. The Silver Service Star (3/16") is worn in lieu of 5 Bronze Service Stars.

The Bronze "V" device indicates an award for Valor. The Bronze Star or Army Commendation Medal can be awarded for Valor, service, or achievement. The "V" device does not denote a second award, but indicates the award was for combat heroism.

The Bronze Arrowhead is worn on the ribbons of campaign or service awards and indicates participation in an initial assault landing by sea or air. Only ONE may be worn on any single ribbon.

The Bronze "M" device is worn on the Armed Forces Reserve Medal to indicate reservists mobilized and called to active duty.

A Bronze Numeral Device can be worn on the AIR MEDAL and certain other awards for the number of air strikes/flights, with the Bronze Arrowhead for the number of assualts, or with the Bronze "M" for the number of Mobilizations.

The Fleet Marine Insignia is worn on certain Navy campaign and service ribbons to note participation by Naval personnel in combat actions with Marine Corps units.

The Silver "W" is worn on the Navy and Marine Corps' Expeditionary Medal to indicate participation in the defense of Wake Island.

The gold Berlin Airlift Device is worn on the appropriate Occupation Medal of the various services.

The Bronze "A" device on the American Defense Service Medal indicates participation with the Atlantic Fleet prior to World War II.

The Bronze "A" device on the Air Force Overseas Short Tour Service Ribbon indicates tours of duty north of the Arctic Circle.

For each award of the Navy "E" Ribbon, one Battle "E" device is authorized for wear up to the third award. When a service member receives a fourth Navy "E" award, a Wreathed Battle "E" device replaces the first three devices and effectively "closes out" the award ribbon.

The Wintered Over device indicates wintering over on the Antarctic continent. Bronze = 1st winter, Gold = 2nd winter, Silver = 3rd winter.

The Silver "O" device is worn on certain Coast Guard commendation awards to recognize Operational Distinguishing Service.

The Gold Katrina device is worn on certain Coast Guard commendation awards to recognize service during and after Hurricane Katrina.

The Good Conduct Knot is worn on the ribbons of the Good Conduct Medals of the Army and Air Force to indicate subsequent awards. The number of knots and color indicate the number of awards: Bronze with 1 to 5 knots = 2st to 6th award, Silver with 1 to 5 knots = 7th to 11th award, Gold with 1 to 5 knots = 12th to 16th award.

The Hourglass is worn for each succeeding award of the RESERVE MEDAL for each branch of service. A BRONZE Hourglass indicates the 1st Award, SILVER the 2nd, and GOLD the 3rd.

Bronze/Silver "E" and "S" devices are worn on Marksmanship Ribbons of both Navy and Coast Guard personnel. "E" indicates a rating of "Expert", "S" indicates a rating of "Sharpshooter".
