Golden Party Badge of the NSDAP (Goldenes Ehrenzeichen der NSDAP) Guide

This is an identification guide for the Golden Party Badge of the NSDAP. All Party members who had uninterrupted service with the NSDAP from 27th February 1925 and/or had an NSDAP Party Number from No 1 to 100,000 were eligible for the Golden Party Badge. Due to the requirement of unbroken service, a total number of only 22,282 badges were awarded. The Golden Party Badge consisted of two pieces, a standard NSDAP party badge, a gold frame, and a pin attached to the back of the frame. The Golden Party Badge was produced in two sizes. The large badge, to be worn on the uniform, measured 30.5 mm wide and weighted 13-14 grams depending on the type of pin. The small badge, for civilian wear, measured 25 mm and weighted 8 grams.

Only two makers produced the badges. Deschler & Sohn produced both the large and small sized badges. Jos. Fuess produced only the small size awards. The makers are easily identified by the style of the wreath. Different types of pins were used on the badge, and some badges have period replacements. The reverse has the member's party number, and may have the maker's name.

After the initial badges were awarded, Adolf Hitler used the Golden Party Badge as a personal award given for outstanding service to the party or state. These badges, produced by Deschler, are identical to the standard Golden Party Badge except that the reverse has the date of award and the initials "A.H" instead of the member's party number. The awards were dated in the form 30.1.year. These awards are very rare and it will not be possible to trace the owner uless documentation is included with the award.

As with most German medals, reproductions exist ranging from very poor quality to fairly convincing. Weight, size, and front design details are the key to determining originality.

To the best of our knowledge, all the examples shown are original pre-1945 manufacture. If anyone has questions or suggestions, please contact Vern@GermanDaggers.com.
